Within the academic earth where he spent the better part of his career, the late Joseph Campbell had a somewhat unique arroyo to the study, interpretation, and agreement of mythology. Whereas his fellow scholars most often approached the discipline with an analytic middle, Campbell suggested an alternative fashion --using the artistic heart. In "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" Campbell suggested myths "were not manufactured" that they were "spontaneous productions of the psyche" and that each reflected the "germ power of the source."In A JOSEPH CAMPBELL COMPANION, Diane Osborn has assembled excerpts from Campbell'southward many works, and distilled the central ideas Campbell wrote near over the years concerning the origin and purpose of myths. She has organized these excerpts into topical areas: "In the Field", "Living in the World", "Coming into Sensation", and "Living in the Sacred." Although the topics can be viewed equally linear, reflecting the progress of the soul or psyche, I doubtable Campbell would have suggested they are likewise cyclical and that one exists in all four simultaneously.I feel the concluding section of the Campbell Companion, "Living in the Sacred", contains some peculiarly insightful notions regarding the nature of art and artistic endeavor, and the role of art in affecting human lives. In this section, Osborn has quoted heavily from Campbell's "Myths to Live Past" and provided quotations from several of the artists who affected Campbell'south own life and writing including James Joyce and Walt Whitman. For instance, Campbell describes how the words of the German writer Schiller, in answer to a friend's trouble with 'author'southward block' -- "Your problem is that you bring in the critical cistron before the lyical factor has had a hazard to express itself" -- affected his own thinking and writing. Campbell says he had allowed the criticism of other "scholars" to interfere with his artistic processes, and that Schiller'southward words freed him to get on with "seeing" and "hearing" what myths could teach him. "Mythologies and religions are bully poems and, when recoginzed as such, bespeak infallibly through things and events to the ubiquity of a 'presence' or 'eternity'that is whole and entire in each....The commencement condition, therefore, that any mythology must fulfill if it is to render life to mod lives is that of cleansing the doors of perception to the wonder, at once terrible and fascinating, of ourselves and of the universe of which we are the ears and optics and the mind."

Outstanding. This is my Bible. Unbelievable wealth of things to read and re-read for the rest of your life. His all-time work by far. Near as adept is his 5-record series hosted by Susan Sarandon and much, much improve than his 6-tape set with Bill Moyers which is an elementary introduction to Campbell. Moyers tried hard but couldn't seem to get his brain around Campbell's message. Anyone who wants to be fully engrossed in Campbell can do so with the Sarandon tape series and this volume. A rare gem.

This is 1 of the nigh challenging, thought provoking, mind bending, and soul calling books I have always read. Campbell is then entertaining in his ability to simplify circuitous religious and social structures that information technology is not important to already know virtually the Far Due east, the Near East, or your local Baptist church building, he brings it all into focus on a common human level. I establish this book disturbing in information technology's ability to draw me into the wonder of beingness human and how utterly continued nosotros all are. Information technology'due south the kind of volume that you tin can open up to whatsoever page, read merely a few lines, and be pulled into a idea that will chase yous the whole mean solar day. Campbell is pithy, humorous, applied, fact filled, and inspiring. If you savor thinking nigh God, the nature of beingness human, or politics, BUY THIS Book!!!! You lot won't be lamentable.

This is a dandy introduction to, or summation of, Campbell's works. Almost of his works are extreemly deep and can exist hard to achieve but well worth the effort. If you really desire to probe the deapths of Campbell's piece of work merely are intimidated by his other books, this will give you a neat overview and fire your desire to dig deeper.I have read all of Campbell'due south books. The amount and latitude of the data and thier implications is staggering. The virtually amazing thing about this volume is that I would have chosen virtually exactly the same summative material for this type of book equally did Osborn. My background is steeped in scientific discipline--Osborn'south in poetry. Nevertheless we constitute the same "song of the universe" within Campbell'south works. Why? Considering the vocal is transparent to the transendent and there for the everyone.

I was hooked later on the first judgement: "The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are". Campbell talks to u.s. about work and dear and the significant of life with such clarity that we can't fence, or say "Aye, merely..." When Campbell is only talking (and non in college professor lecture way) he gives tidbits that are reminiscent of Lindbergh's "Gift From The Body of water". "Let the world be every bit it is and learn to rock with the waves." And maybe y'all tin can larn something about people in your life. "In choosing your god, you lot choose your way of looking at the universe. There are plenty of gods...The god you worship is the god you deserve." This is definitely a book to keep and re-read. My favorite thing near it is that you can flip through it, or let information technology autumn open, and you'll notice something worthwhile. You don't take to read the whole book all at in one case to 'go information technology'.
